Our results clearly define the H. pylori East Asian lineage as distinct at the genome level from the African, European or Amerind lineages (Table 2). The East Asian lineage consists of Japanese and Korean genomes and corresponds to hspEAsia in the phylogenetic tree of the concatenated seven genes used for multi-locus sequence typing. The hspEAsia and hspAmerind lineages form a phylogenetic group hpEastAsia.
